Seth MacFarlane’s Star Trek doppelgänger The Orville is coming back to FOX for season 2 this December, and the network has a new trailer teasing its return. Season 1 of the series delivered in the ratings department, but not so much with critics, many of whom found the show’s attempts at humor to be flat and incongruent, while its efforts to imitate the look, tone, and structure of Star Trek to have stunted the show’s efforts to find a voice of its own. Nevertheless, the series was successful enough to garner a second season, and after more than a year from when the first season ended, The Orville will return for more space-faring adventures. Adventure seems to be the key selling point of season 2. That’s a distinct change from the first season, which seemed to be a little unsure at times if it wanted to be a comedy, a drama, a sci-fi adventure series, or a spoof on Gene Roddenberry’s classic television series. Narrowing the focus down a bit is certainly in the series’ best interests, and from what’s on display in the new trailer, The Orville is touting itself less as a goof on Star Trek and more as a successor to the series itself. “New missions, epic adventures” is pretty much all FOX needs to say to get fans of this show watching, and it might even improve the series’ favor among critics, if it can deliver. The new trailer certainly makes it look as though The Orville is taking its sci-fi storytelling more seriously, as there’s but a single joke (well, joke is being generous) in the entirety of the 30-second ad, but one elephant-nosed alien saying, “Man, this is bitchin’” is a fairly harmless reach for some tonal variance.

The US Copyright Office has published a list of new exemptions to the DMCA's anti-circumvention rules. Several new freedoms were granted this year, including the right for preservation institutions to break DRM to play abandoned online games. It's a small change that only applies if the server code is legally obtained, but for game preservationists, it's a step in the right direction. There are a lot of things people are not allowed to do under US copyright law, but perhaps just as importantly there are exemptions. The U.S. Copyright Office regularly reviews these exemptions to Section 1201 of the DMCA, which prevent the public from ‘tinkering’ with DRM-protected content and devices. These provisions are renewed every three years after the Office hears various arguments from stakeholders and the general public. This year, this process has resulted in some noteworthy changes There was a major victory for the “right to repair” movement, as Vice points out, which gives the public more leeway to fix their own devices even if the means that they have to break DRM in the process. In addition, there’s also an important update related to the preservation of abandoned games. To preserve these games for future generations and nostalgic gamers, the Copyright Office previously included game preservation exemptions. This meant that libraries, archives, and museums can use emulators and other circumvention tools to make old classics playable. However, these exemptions are limited and do not apply to games that require a connection to an online server, which includes the most recent games. When the online servers are taken down, the game simply disappears forever. To address this, several game fans including San Francisco’s Museum of Art and Digital Entertainment (The MADE) urged the Copyright Office to expand the DMCA exemptions to online games. And with the release of the new exemptions, game archivists gained some new freedoms. The new exemptions will allow preservation institutions who legally possess a copy of a video game’s server code and the game’s local code, to break DRM and other technological restrictions to make these playable. This type of “tinkering” is seen as fair use by the Government, which rejects critique from the major game companies who fear that this may hurt sales of the games they sell. Part of the new exemptions (full decision here) https://torrentfreak.com/images/gameexem.jpg The MADE founder Alex Handy informs TorrentFreak he is happy with the decision but notes that there still is a long way to go before all games can be legally archived. “While this exemption does not necessarily fix all the problems that are out there in the difficult realm of digital preservation, it is another step forward toward reforming our extremely restrictive digital copyright laws,” Handy tells us. “We’ve gained a small victory that will help us save dead MMOs, provided, of course, we have been given the original server code by the owning entity. The exemption allows us to circumvent any DRM or other restrictions included in the game, or around it.” The exemption process generally moves slowly but for game preservationists, this is certainly a step in the right direction. Handy notes that the Copyright Office put a lot of work into their review, but that it may not fully understand what’s at stake here. Without proper exemptions to legally archive works, many games are at risk of being lost forever. “When George Martin was asked why he hadn’t saved more Beatles outtakes and recordings, he responded that he didn’t know anyone would care about those things in the future,” Handy says. “The same thing is going on in the games industry, and it is only very recently that most companies in the industry have begun to properly preserve their histories, source code and all.” This was also illustrated by James Clarendon, software development manager at Amazon, during a hearing on the exemptions earlier this year. He worked for 2K Games in 2012 and was confronted with this problem when the company wanted to reissue their megahit BioShock after five years. “The problem was, was that no archive of that game existed and nobody had actually put in the time to build an archive for that. We had to scour people’s machines, artists, engineers, everybody’s machines to find the missing pieces and put it back together,” Clarendon said, adding that they didn’t manage to reissue the full original. The MADE says that it will continue work to widen the exemptions until all games can be properly archived. That will likely take a few more hearings, at a minimum, but they believe it’s worth the effort. “The MADE is thankful for everyone who helped out in this project, including our friends in the industry, the folks at Reddit’s PCMasterRace and our lawyers from UC Berkeley,” Handy says. A full overview of the Copyright Office’s final rules is available here (pdf). This also includes a new DMCA circumvention exemption for filmmakers to rip a DVD or Blu-Ray disc, beyond the documentary genre, although that remains limited. Source: Torrentfreak.com

Ofcom will not be pursuing the complaints further Media watchdog Ofcom have reportedly received 59 complaints for ‘race discrimination and offence’ against Capital Breakfast host Roman Kemp, in relation to his comments relating to BTS. The presenter was forced to apologise after comments he made about the South Korean band upset listeners back in September. “That was BTS and Nicki Minaj, that noise you were just hearing there,” he said after playing the single ‘IDOL’, before co-host Vick Hope replied: “That song. Oh Roman, please, I didn’t say anything.” Presenter Sonny Jay then added: “I thought there [were] construction workers outside.” The comments soon saw scores of their fanbase, The BTS Army, take to social media to bombard the presenters and the radio station with complains. Now, it has emerged that Ofcom reportedly received 59 complaints of ‘Race discrimination/offence’ against Kemp and the show. The media regulator says that they have assessed the complaints, but will not be taking the matter further. An Ofcom spokesperson told NME: “We considered complaints about the presenter’s description of a song by the Korean group BTS. “In our view, the presenter was expressing a personal opinion about the music, which was not racially motivated.” Explaining the context of the complaints, Ofcom said confirmed that they receoved 59 complaints alleging that Roman Kemp’s description of the Korean K-Pop group BTS’ song ‘IDOL’ as “noise” and “construction works” was xenophobic – but that they did not “identify any explicit racial inference from Roman’s description of the track”. Ofcom also added that this did not raise any issues under the Broadcasting Code. Following the flurry of initial complaints, Kemp soon issues an apology. “The comments I have made have been widely twisted and labelled as something that they are not,” he told followers on social media. “I will accept 100% responsibility if some of the views I put across have been deemed offensive and to those I can only apologise. No offence was ever meant. Watch: BTS vs the Army – we ask the band your questions “It’s never my intention to garner negative energy for anyone let alone within the world of music that I love so dearly. However comments have started to now be aimed toward not only myself but my family and loved ones, I would please ask for this to stop. He added:”I am sorry to anyone who may have been offended by any comment I have made toward BTS. I ask all BTS fans to know in their hearts that I have never thought anything negative of the band nor would I wont to stop the joy of spreading music.” Meanwhile, BTS Member RM has announced details of a second solo mix tape. RM’s latest output will be titled ‘Mono’ and features seven songs and several collaborations. British electronic duo HONNE produced new track ‘Seoul’, while ‘Bad Bye’ is a collaboration with eAeon and song ‘Pass By’ is a collaboration with indie rock band Nell. BigHit Entertainment tweeted the news of the upcoming release to their eight million followers, accompanied by a picture of the list of new songs and the caption “#RM #mono. Tracklist”. K-pop sensation BTS, of which RM is a member, then retweeted the news and added that the new tracks will be released on October 23

With a staggering, $77.5 million debut, Universal and Blumhouse's Halloween topped the weekend with the second largest October opening weekend of all-time. The horror film headlined a massive weekend overall weekend, that saw the top twelve combine for over $160 million, making this the second largest October weekend ever. As already mentioned, Halloween's $77.5 million three-day debut was the second largest October opening weekend of all-time, coming less than $3 million shy of the record set by Venom earlier this month. That said, Halloween did deliver the largest October opening day of all-time, topping Venom's $32.5 million. The film's opening is also the second largest ever for an R-rated horror, topping the $53.8 million opening for The Nun a month ago and behind It's $123.4 million debut last September. The film, which carries a tiny, $10 million production budget, features Jamie Lee Curtis in her iconic role of Laurie Strode and beyond landing well with critics in advance of release, it was equally successful with audiences, earning a "B+" CinemaScore, which is a strong grade for a horror film. Overall, it played to a crowd that was 53% male and 59% were age 25 or older, The film should play well over the coming weeks, especially with its namesake holiday just around the corner. Internationally, Halloween brought in an estimated $14.3 million from 23 markets, with Mexico leading the way with a chart-topping $4.9 million opening followed by the U.K. & Ireland ($3.6m), Russia ($1.79m) and Indonesia ($1.09m). The film still has 46 markets yet to open in including France next weekend followed by Australia, Brazil, Italy, Germany and Spain the following weekend and South Korea on October 31. Finishing in the runner-up position is A Star is Born, which continues to climb the list of films that never hit #1 at the weekend box office. This weekend the film added an estimated $19.3 million to its domestic total, which now stands at $126.4 million as it enters its third week in release. Internationally, A Star is Born remained strong, delivering an estimated $22.8 million from 75 overseas markets, pushing the film's worldwide cume to $201.1 million. This weekend saw #1 openings in Australia ($4.7m) and Hong Kong ($629k) with the UK still leading the way with $19.5 million. The last key market yet to open is Japan where the film will land on December 21. Sony's Venom falls two spots after topping the weekend chart for the past two weekends with an estimated $18.1 million, pushing its domestic cume over $170 million as it too enters its third week in release. While falling from its #1 perch domestically, the film remained the #1 international release for the third straight week, bringing in an estimated $32.3 million from 65 overseas markets for an international cume totaling $290.7 million and a worldwide total of $461.2 million. Sony also took the fourth spot on the weekend chart with Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween, which brought in an estimated $9.7 million for a domestic cume that now totals $28.8 million after ten days in release. The film also added another $6.2 million internationally this weekend bringing its global cume to $39.9 million. Universal's First Man rounds out the top five, dropping -46% in its second weekend for an estimated $2.35 million three-day and a domestic cume that now stands at $30 million. It's an unfortunate performance for the Universal title, which was hoping to play along the same lines of films such as Bridge of Spies and Argo, but it seems to have been lost in the shuffle. Internationally the film added 25 new markets, now playing in 47 total where it brought in an estimated $13.4 million for an overseas cume totaling $25.5 million. South Korea led the weekend's new markets with a #1 finish and estimated $3.5 million performance. Just outside the top five is Fox's expansion of The Hate U Give, which played in 2,303 locations (+2,055) and delivered an estimated $7.5 million for a domestic cume that now tops $10.5 million. The film could be looking at a healthy run moving forward after receiving an impressive "A+" CinemaScore from Friday's audiences. The film played to an audience that was 64% female with 51% of the audience coming in aged 25 or older. Rounding out the top ten is Fox Searchlight's expansion of The Old Man & the Gun, which expanded to 802 locations (+574) and delivered an estimated $2.05 million for the weekend, and a domestic cume that now totals $4.2 million. Landing outside the top ten is Annapurna's expansion of The Sisters Brothers into 1,141 locations (+1,012) for a disappointing $742,014 and a per theater average of just $650. In limited release, A24's release of Jonah Hill's Mid90s brought in an estimated $249,500 from just four locations for a chart-topping $62,375 per theater average. It's a great start for the film which will expand nationwide next weekend. Additional limited releases include Fox Searchlight's Can You Ever Forgive Me? which brought in $150,000 from five theaters ($30,000 PTA); IFC's Wildlife debuted with $05,614 from five locations ($26,404 PTA); Bleecker's What They Had debuted with $18,845 from four locations ($4,711 PTA); Abramorama's The Price of Everything delivered $17,280 from one theater; Janus's re-release of Win Wenders's Wings of Desire brought in $11,635 from one location; The Film Arcade's An Evening with Beverly Luff Linn opened with just $4,800 from 16 theaters; Oscilloscope's On Her Shoulders opened with $4,500 from one location; Cinema Libre's The Advocates opened in one theater with $4,000; and Abramorama's Horn from the Heart debuted with $2,357 from one theater. Next weekend sees the release of the submarine action-thriller Hunter Killer opening in ~2,600 locations along with Pure Flix's Indivisible. Additionally, Universal will debut Johnny English Strikes Again in moderate release following what has already been a strong overseas performance where the film has currently grossed $96 million from 57 markets. Amazon Studios will also begin its platform release of Suspiria and Neon will open Border while Roadside debuts Viper Club.

It's taken from the soundtrack to the forthcoming film 'Boy Erased' Troye Sivan and Sigur Ros‘ Jónsi have shared their first ever collaboration, ‘Revelation’ – check it out below. The two artists have linked up for a spot on the soundtrack to the upcoming film Boy Erased, which Sivan has a supporting part in. Jónsi has also recorded another song for the soundtrack, which is set for a digital release on October 26 and physically on November 2 (the same day as Boy Erased‘s theatrical release). Boy Erased will also star the likes of Nicole Kidman and Russell Crowe. Sivan will play a supporting role as a man the central character Jared (Lucas Hedges) meets at a gay conversion therapy program he is sent to by his Baptist parents (Kidman and Crowe). Speaking about the song’s part in the film, Sivan explained: “I got together with Jónsi of Sigur Rós and Leland. Joel [Edgerton, writer/director] showed us a scene from the movie, and I don’t want to spoil anything, but it’s this one moment of relief in the film. It’s this one really sweet, tender moment where Jared does something that I would consider pure and beautiful and normal and romantic. “He has that experience and the sky doesn’t fall down on him,” Sivan continued. “The world doesn’t come crashing down, and it’s a ‘revelation’ to him. That person that he was with is a revolution to him, and it was just so inspiring. So, we started with these lyrics of ‘you’re a revelation, you’re a revolution’.”

NASA has named a star constellation after the iconic monster known around the world as Godzilla. The giant creature first appeared in Toho's Gojira, which was later adapted for an Americanized version called Godzilla, King of the Monsters!. Since the monster's creation in 1954, there have been 31 Toho produced films and three American-made films, including the upcoming Godzilla: King of the Monsters which is part of Warner Bros. MonsterVerse. Godzilla is a giant prehistoric sea monster who was awakened due to the testing of nuclear bombs. Even though Godzilla was originally seen as a metaphor about the use of nuclear weapons, later films decided to leave out this detail and just have him battle other giant creatures. Godzilla has several unique powers and abilities that make him one of the toughest movie monsters out there. Some of his abilities include a nuclear pulse which releases a ton of nuclear energy from his body to damage his foes. He also absorbs energy to become more powerful and has a regenerative healing factor and an incredibly durable hide. However, Godzilla's signature power is that of his atomic breath, which shoots concentrated radioactive plasma. This ability can make for some extraordinary cinematic moments, but also inspired NASA to give the character his own constellation. NASA decided to name a constellation after Godzilla since his signature power is similar to gamma-ray jets that the stars in the constellation emit. When further explaining the science behind gamma-ray jets, NASA wrote, "When a massive star runs out of fuel and collapses under its own weight, or when two orbiting neutron stars spiral together and merge, a new black hole — and high-speed jets — may form. The result is a gamma-ray burst, the most powerful explosion in the cosmos. These monstrous blasts, which occur somewhere in the distant universe every day or so according to observations by Fermi's Gamma-ray Burst Monitor, would make even Godzilla envious". Godzilla's atomic breath has been seen several times during his cinematic career. It first appeared back in the '50s, but has changed slightly over the years. Most of the time, his atomic breath is seen as a thick blue beam that comes from his mouth. In Gareth Edwards' 2014 film, Godzilla pried the mouth of a MUTO- which are now referred to as Titans- open in order to kill the creature with his atomic breath. Godzilla will likely use this incredibly powerful ability again when he battles King Kong in 2020 for the film Godzilla vs. Kong. When the character of Godzilla was first created, he quickly became an iconic image all around Japan and eventually made his way into American pop culture. That being said, it's not that big of a surprise that NASA decided to name a constellation after him. NASA has also named constellations after the Marvel character Hulk, and the time travel vessel from Doctor Who called the TARDIS. With Godzilla's current popularity around the world, it seems fitting that the giant sea creature now has a spot among the stars as well.
